Photo of the day - Only time will tell

Sun bird

This was my first bird shot taken 2 weeks ago while i was doing my research at Pulau Burung.

The place is called Pulau Burung because there are a lot of migratory birds as well as local birds nesting and feeding in that location.

But unfortunately that place is also a landfill site for Penang state. Big part of the mangrove forest has been cleared to get a place to 'store' your dumps! Yes you... i'm talking about your dumps penangites!!

It is raining season this months, the leachate collected from the landfill site has overflown and drained out to the nearby streams and rivers. Sad case... I think i should post some photos of the leachate pond and rubbish mountains next time. I wonder how long these sunbirds can survive in this area.

Only time will tell...

Scraplife: E-Waste in Pakistan

Scraplife: E-Waste in Pakistan <-- Click Here

Photographs and story by Robert Knoth. In June 2008 Greenpeace tracked a shipment of e-waste from Europe to its final resting place - Pakistan. This is the story of what happens to that e-waste and the people it affects.

Thousands of tons of e-waste – such as discarded PCs, mobile phones and TVs - are dumped in Africa and Asia every year. Our research shows that some of this waste is exported to Pakistan.

In the Karachi district of Lyari, hundreds of workers, including teenage children, earn their livelihoods by dismantling the electronic scrap and extracting valuable components such as copper to sell. This is a insight into the personal cost of e-waste.

Manufactures can help ensure the problem of toxic e-waste is solved. Find out which companies are doing the most to tackle the problem.

Many thanks,

Eoin, Juliette, Tom and the Greenpeace toxics campaign.
